Make it a Monument! Protect the Northern Angeles National Forest Forever.
One of the best kept secrets in Southern California is the magnificent canyon and mountain country north of Santa Clarita that features awesome views to Catalina Island, a segment of the famed Pacific Crest Trail, and California Condors soaring overhead. These 240,000 acres of national forest are a major wildlife corridor hub, and rich in cultural heritage as the ancestral home of the Tataviam and Chumash Peoples. A National Monument designation will protect ancient burial grounds and other heritage sites.
The Northern Angeles National Monument will help protect against threats like mining, development, highways, and habitat fragmentation while improving cultural, recreation and open space protections. Our local national forest has its challenges. It has been neglected for years, with facilities closing and staffing all but gone. It needs more resources and a new management direction, all of which a national monument designation could help provide. A national monument will better honor our history, improve recreation, and better preserve habitat for wildlife.
